OHIO — First responders safely handled a potentially dangerous explosive device found Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.

The Weathersfield Fire Department reported that someone came to the station around 4:40 p.m. to report an item they believed to be an explosive, which had been recently acquired from an auction site. Firefighters secured the surrounding area as a precaution.

The Weathersfield Police Department and Bomb Squad were called to the scene. Officials identified the device as a railroad torpedo, a small explosive historically placed on railway lines to detonate when compressed by train wheels.

The Bomb Squad safely removed the device, and no injuries were reported.
