OHIO — A small earthquake was reported early Thursday morning along the Kentucky/Ohio border, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed.

The 2.4 magnitude tremor occurred shortly after midnight, about 4 miles southeast of Georgetown, Ohio, and 40 miles southeast of Cincinnati.

The earthquake struck at a depth of about 5 miles, but its weak magnitude means it was unlikely to have been felt by residents.

Earthquakes with magnitudes under 2.5 typically go unnoticed by people, though they are detected by seismographs.

While weak tremors are relatively common in this region, the area is considered one of the least likely in the U.S. to experience damaging earthquakes, according to the USGS.

The highest earthquake risks in the country are found in the Mississippi River Valley, parts of the West Coast, Alaska, and Hawaii.
