DUI prevention operation planned in part of Florida this weekend

FLORIDA — Law enforcement agencies across Pinellas County will be conducting a DUI prevention operation this weekend aimed at keeping impaired drivers off the roads.

The operation will run from 7 p.m. Saturday, August 30, through 5 a.m. Sunday, August 31, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO).

Deputies will be joined by the Florida Highway Patrol and the police departments of St. Petersburg, Tarpon Springs and Clearwater.

The DUI initiative is dedicated to the McConnell family, who lost four loved ones in a DUI crash in 2010. That July, Roy McConnell and his three sons, Roy, Nathan and Kelly, were killed instantly when an impaired driver speeding more than 80 mph ran a red light in St. Petersburg.

PCSO said the goal of the operation is to educate drivers and raise awareness about the dangers of impaired driving while honoring the memory of the McConnell family.
