SOUTH CAROLINA — Authorities are investigating after a man was pronounced dead while officers were responding to his arrest earlier this month, according to incident reports from the Horry County Police Department.
Police said officers were dispatched to a home on Pilot House Court on Feb. 14. When they arrived, Horry County Fire Rescue personnel were assisting with an arrest involving the man inside the residence. He was later pronounced dead in the master bedroom of the home.
According to reports, a woman at the residence told officers the man had suffered a head injury in a motorcycle crash the previous day. She said he was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash and declined medical evaluation.
The woman also told police that a friend had visited the man and noticed a change in his behavior, reportedly saying that “his behavior changed and she noticed that his eyes looked different.”
During their response, officers located a plastic bag containing what is believed to be cocaine, along with a separate bag containing needles, inside the home.
Officials later confirmed that the motorcycle crash occurred on Feb. 12 and that the South Carolina Highway Patrol responded to the scene. The man reportedly refused medical treatment at that time as well.
The case remains under active investigation.
