NORTH CAROLINA — A fatal crash near Durham has shut down westbound lanes of Interstate 40 for several hours Sunday morning, leaving drivers stuck in heavy traffic, according to local authorities.

The crash was reported just before 5:45 a.m. near Exit 282 for Page Road. Durham police confirmed that at least one person was killed.

As of 10:45 a.m., at least two left lanes remained closed, and traffic was moving slowly as drivers merged right to exit onto Page Road.

Earlier in the morning, all westbound lanes were completely blocked, causing backups stretching for several miles.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation said the highway may not fully reopen until around noon.

Drivers are urged to avoid the area and use alternate routes until the scene is cleared. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
