Dead animals found at Florida rescue, owner arrested on multiple charges

FLORIDA — The owner of a self-described animal rescue in Citrus County has been arrested after deputies say they discovered multiple dead animals on the property and dozens more living in deplorable conditions.

Jordyn Hess, 24, was taken into custody on 11 felony counts of aggravated animal cruelty and 22 misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty, according to the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office.

Hess operates a rescue known as “Hess Haven,” which, according to its website, was founded in January 2024. The site states she has been rescuing animals for at least eight years.

Detectives said when they visited the Floral City property Monday, they found several dead cats inside trash bags, a dead dog locked in a carrier and three dead birds in a chicken coop.

Investigators also reported finding a dog and nine cats living among litter boxes overflowing with feces. An additional 12 cats were being kept in a shed without food or water.

In total, authorities removed 43 animals from the property. The animals were taken to Citrus County Animal Services for medical treatment.

Hess was booked into the Citrus County Detention Facility. Authorities said it is unclear whether she had the proper licensing required to operate an animal rescue. As of Tuesday, the organization’s website remained active.

The sheriff’s office urged residents to thoroughly research and verify the legitimacy of any rescue organization before donating money or supplies, noting that reputable rescues are transparent about their operations, maintain required licensing and prioritize animal welfare.

The investigation remains ongoing.
