OHIO — Authorities are investigating a suspected murder-suicide after a man and woman were found shot dead in their home last Monday.

Columbiana County Sheriff Brian McLaughlin confirmed deputies responded to a residence in West Township following a request for a welfare check.

Shortly after, a 16-year-old boy called 911 to report discovering the bodies of his mother, Vanessa Chester, and his stepfather, Jason Hilaire, in the basement.

According to WFMJ, the welfare check was requested by a man who had received a 28-minute “ominous sounding voicemail” from Hilaire.

The sheriff’s office said the couple, who were in the process of divorcing, died in what appears to be a murder-suicide.

Child Protective Services responded to care for the 16-year-old and his younger sister, who were at the scene.

The investigation remains ongoing.
