VIRGINIA — A corrections officer was killed and another injured after an inmate attacked both officers Monday morning at River North Correctional Center in Independence, according to the Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC).
The attack occurred around 7:53 a.m., officials said. Both officers were taken for medical treatment, but one died at a local hospital.
“Our agency and the entire Commonwealth are in mourning today. Our hearts are with the Officer’s family, the other Officer who was attacked, and our public safety heroes at River North,” VADOC Director Chad Dotson said in a statement. “The VADOC will do everything in its power to ensure this vicious attack is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
VADOC said the facility is secure, and additional details will be released as the investigation continues.
