INDIANA — A 21-year-old Indianapolis man is in custody after police say he fatally shot a bystander during a dispute at a Greenwood apartment complex Tuesday night.
Officers responded around 10:15 p.m. to the 800 block of Dover Drive at Westminster Apartments after reports of gunfire. They found 22-year-old Greenwood resident Bidan Mburu unconscious with a gunshot wound. He was transported to Methodist Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Investigators said the suspect got into an altercation with another individual and opened fire, missing his intended target and striking Mburu instead. The suspect fled the scene.
Greenwood detectives, with help from Indiana State Police and the U.S. Marshals Service, later located the suspect at Inn Town Suites near Interstate 70 and Post Road in Indianapolis. He was taken into custody without incident by Greenwood SWAT.
The suspect is being held without bail at the Johnson County Jail while the Johnson County Prosecutor’s Office reviews the case.
The investigation remains ongoing.
