Big Lots reaches agreement to save some Ohio stores

OHIO — Big Lots, Inc., a retailer headquartered in Columbus, has announced a sale agreement with Gordon Brothers Retail Partners, LLC, paving the way for Variety Wholesalers, Inc. to acquire up to 400 Big Lots stores nationwide.

The agreement includes the potential transfer of two distribution centers and other company assets, such as intellectual property, with the intention of preserving the Big Lots brand and jobs.

Variety Wholesalers, which operates over 400 stores across the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic under banners like Roses, Maxway, and Bargain Town, plans to keep the acquired locations operating as Big Lots stores.

The company also aims to retain current Big Lots associates at the stores, distribution centers, and within select corporate roles essential to the transition.

Big Lots President and CEO Bruce Thorn emphasized the importance of the deal in protecting jobs and maintaining the company’s brand.

“The strategic sale to Gordon Brothers and the transfer to Variety Wholesalers is a favorable and significant achievement for Big Lots that reflects the tireless work and collective effort of our team. This sale agreement and transfer present the strongest opportunity to preserve jobs, maximize value for the estate, and ensure continuity of the Big Lots brand. Ohio, home to dozens of Big Lots locations, could see many of these stores remain under the company’s brand thanks to the agreement.

Gordon Brothers’ Rick Edwards praised the partnership’s potential.

“We are pleased to reach this strategic agreement with Big Lots and partner with Variety Wholesalers to achieve a path forward that allows Big Lots to continue to serve customers with extreme bargains and an outstanding shopping experience,” Edwards said.

Lisa Seigies, President and CEO of Variety Wholesalers, expressed excitement about the brand’s future.

“We are excited to partner with Gordon Brothers to provide a path forward for the Big Lots brand and hundreds of its stores. We look forward to working with members of the Big Lots team to realize the exciting opportunities ahead,” she said.

The sale is still subject to approval by the Bankruptcy Court and other closing conditions.

If approved, the transition could mark a significant step in ensuring the survival of Big Lots locations in Ohio and beyond.
