INDIANA — A 19-year-old man is facing charges after police said he stole a car at gunpoint and later crashed it while fleeing in Indianapolis.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said the carjacking happened around 11 p.m. Monday, Sept. 29, in the 3200 block of Central Avenue, just south of East 30th Street.
A woman told officers she had been robbed of her car keys at gunpoint before the suspect ran off with her vehicle.
Less than two hours later, officers responded to a crash involving the stolen car near East 16th and Alabama streets, north of downtown. Witnesses reported seeing the suspect run from the scene, and officers quickly detained him nearby.
Police said the man faces preliminary charges of armed robbery and unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon. The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will review the case and make final charging decisions.
