SOUTH CAROLINA — The Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office has opened an investigation into an incident at Shoally Creek Elementary School involving a contracted teacher accused of spitting on and kicking a student.
Deputies confirmed the teacher was not employed by Spartanburg County School District 2, but instead worked through a third-party contracting service.
Officials said the district immediately ended its relationship with the worker, who will not return to the school.
In a message sent to families on Saturday, Shoally Creek Elementary Principal Mr. Rhode addressed the allegations directly.
“Good afternoon this is Mr. Rhode at Shoally Creek Elementary,
“It has always been my commitment that you hear important information about our school directly from us. This is vital to ensure that we have a trusting and strong relationship with our families.”
“This commitment is the reason I am calling today.
“Allegations have been made regarding potential misconduct by one of our teachers towards a student. Yesterday, we communicated with the impacted class and the family of that student separately.
“On Friday, after hearing the claims, we began investigating alongside our school resource officer. Soon after, the teacher was removed from the classroom and will not be returning to our school.
“The matter is now being handled by the Sheriff’s Office.
“Our school and school district will assist law enforcement in whatever way possible, and support your children with all of our resources.
“Because this is now a law enforcement matter, this is all of the information we can share at this time.
“I thank you for your time and appreciate your faith in us.”
The sheriff’s office has not released further details, and the investigation remains ongoing.
