FLORIDA — At least 21 homes were evacuated Thursday night in the Spring Ridge Estates subdivision of Eustis after a bridge in the neighborhood was declared unsafe, according to local officials.
The evacuations took place on Creek Run Lane after authorities determined that the damaged bridge could not safely support emergency vehicles, including fire trucks. Law enforcement has blocked off access to the neighborhood and is monitoring the closure.
City officials said flash flooding caused significant damage to the bridge, washing out parts of its structure. Many residents were reportedly ready to leave after noticing sections of the bridge beginning to collapse.
Eustis Fire Chief said repairs will take time due to several utilities located beneath the bridge that were also affected. Crews are assessing the damage and developing a plan to restore safe access to the area.
