MICHIGAN — Fourteen people have been arrested in connection with an organized fraud and theft operation involving delivery service platforms, according to the Kent County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities said the investigation began after Amazon reported that third-party delivery drivers were being paid to deliver packages but were instead stealing portions of those deliveries. Officials said the drivers, known as “Amazon Flex” drivers, are independent contractors and not directly employed by the company.
As detectives continued their investigation, they uncovered that the suspects were also using other delivery platforms, including DoorDash, as part of the scheme.
Investigators said the group created multiple driver accounts using fraudulent identities. Those accounts were allegedly used to collect payments while also stealing items assigned for delivery.
According to the sheriff’s office, the suspects were staying in local hotels while carrying out the operation. Authorities also discovered equipment used to produce fake out-of-state identification cards.
Search warrants led to the seizure of computers, printers used to make fraudulent IDs, large amounts of cash and stolen merchandise.
Officials said the group is believed to be connected to a South American theft organization with ties to Venezuela and noted the case reflects a growing nationwide trend.
All 14 suspects were taken into custody and charged with conducting a criminal enterprise. The investigation remains ongoing.
