Juvenile dead following shooting in Ohio

OHIO — A 10-year-old boy was shot in the head Friday night on Cleveland’s East Side and later died from his injuries, according to Cleveland police.

Officers responded around 7:50 p.m. to a ShotSpotter alert indicating gunfire in the 3900 block of East 147th Street.

Shortly after arriving, police learned that a gunshot victim was being transported to the Fourth District police station in a private vehicle.

Officers attempted to render first aid before the boy was taken to a nearby hospital. He was pronounced dead around 2 a.m. Saturday, police said.

Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb called the shooting a tragedy, emphasizing the need for a safer community.

“Our children deserve to grow up safe,” Bibb said in a statement. “This is a tragedy that should never happen, and we owe it to this child — and every child — to do more, to be better, and to demand a world where kids can grow up without fear and violence.”

Cleveland Police Chief Dorothy Todd also condemned the violence, vowing to find those responsible.

“This senseless act of violence has stolen the life of an innocent child, and my heart goes out to the family in this unimaginable time of grief,” Todd said. “We will be relentless in finding who is responsible.”

The shooting remains under investigation. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Cleveland Police Homicide Unit at 216-623-5464.
